We were very lucky to have a maternity nurse staying with us for four weeks after the twins were born. Advantages were that we got into some helpful routines and had an extra pair of hands. I had no idea how much there would be to do. And our maternity nurse was very good at not intruding on our evenings and looking after the twins.

The disadvantages were few, for me mainly revolving around me not feeling that I knew what the routines were or that I felt like it took me ages to bond with Tilly and Scott. Having said that, we were very lucky to have someone on-hand who knew about breastfeeding twins who could share her expertise with Charlotte often.

Now that we’re back to our old selves, without the maternity nurse, it’s taken some time for us to get our routines sorted out. Being the Dad and having useless man-boobs, I seem to sleep ok. Charlotte, however, is needed at 3.00 am most nights to do the night feed, and then again at 6.00 am.

For me it’s easier, I just get on with the 9.30 pm feed using bottles of formula. I remember that this was one of the great interactions I had with Monty when he was a baby and it meant I felt very bonded to him by the time we stopped doing the 11.00 pm feed. I missed it for a while afterwards. It was “our” time, just Monty and Daddy. And now I’m having “our” time all over again with Tilly and Scott, a little earlier in the evening at the moment but hopefully soon we can move this to a little later. My ideal would be an 11.00 pm feed with the twins sleeping through to 6.00 or 7.00 am. That would mean Charlotte could skip the 3.00 am feed and sleep from 9.00 or 10.00 pm right through until morning.

It’s much harder, I’ve found, feeding twins. Initially I tried a casual approach. Lining up the baby lying-down bouncey things (technical term) I thought it couldn’t be too difficult to have a bottle in each hand and sit on the floor in between them. This way I envisaged two perfectly well-behaved mites being very accommodating and lying on their backs letting Daddy feed them. This would mean I could combine activities. I could feed them and get up to date with watching the back issues of The Shield on dvd. I’ve just finished Series 3 and would like to graduate to Series 4 soon.

However, Tilly and Scott have their own ideas (who would have thought?) and so it’s a trickier process than I imagined.

For starters, I’m not sure they have the same appreciation for the tight script, superb cinematography, sharp direction and engaging characters. This means they act totally disinterested, requiring my attention whenever it suits them, not when it suits me. Pause gets pressed a lot, and it can take anything up to two hours to watch a one hour episode.

Nevertheless, the feed gets done in about an hour every night. And the twins have their own way of feeding. Tilly likes to feed in small doses and dribbles out of the left side of her mouth - she’s difficult to wind adequately. Scott likes to drink as much as possible in one go, is very easy to wind, and then prefers to go straight back to sleep. It’s funny noticing how different they are already.

So we’re getting our routines gradually established. Sometimes they work well, sometimes less so. But it’s all good fun, and for the most part, I’m enjoying the ride.

The midwives have now signed us off and are now happy we’re heading in the right direction and don’t need their support any more.

Their last task was to weigh the twins so Charlotte, our excellent maternity nurse Odette and I had made bets on the weight of the little ones. Charlotte was first (Mummy’s prerogative I guess) as the final weights were:

      Tilly Xanthe 7 lbs

        Scott Tyser 7 lbs

Still a good deal smaller than Monty when he was born (8 lbs) but a lot bigger than they were last week.

And they seem to be putting on weight at healthy rate.

I sometimes lift up Monty or look at him and realise that I don’t really remember him being so small. He’s growing up way too fast.

Wait a minute… haven’t I heard every parent I’ve ever known tell me that all my life?

Amazingly the midwives and hospital staff were so pleased with how the delivery had gone they said we could bring the twins home within a matter of hours of their birth.

So, after a hearing check and the all-clear from the pediatrician we were all able to come home. We’d been concerned about possible jealousy arising from Monty and had made several preparations to avert this. One of these was that we gave him the Roary the Racing Car presents which Tilly and Scott had got especially for him. He was extremely grateful and thanked them both before insisting we took them home so he could play with them - the cars that is.

He did spend a fair amount of time looking at them, stroking their faces gently and comparing their tiny hands against his much bigger ones.

He’s still at the curious stage and isn’t too sure about them so we’re trying to make him feel extra special for having a little sister and brother. I’m having photos printed of the twins and all of us coming home so he can show them to his friends at nursery school.

So far, the twins haven’t fed much, they haven’t been awake much, and they seem pretty chilled out. It’s obviously a very good sign and I expect this behaviour to last forever. Right?

                        The Twins Have Arrived!

birthoftwins016.gifLuke, Charlotte and Monty are delighted to announce the birth of their twins, a girl and a boy, both born yesterday, 31st October 2007:

Tilly Xanthe Cunliffe was born at 2335 hrs weighing in at 6 lbs 5oz.

Scott Tyser Cunliffe was born at 2359 hrs (and 50 seconds, I kid you not) weighing in at 7 lbs 1oz.

Ten seconds later and they would have been born in different months…

Both were born naturally after three and a half hours of contractions. Charlotte and the babies are all in fantastic shape and looking forward to coming home later today. Many thanks to all the staff at St George’s Hospital in Tooting who were flawless in their support and efforts. We can’t thank them enough for being so safe, reassuring, kind and professional.

Photos are attached and more will follow no doubt as we go completely silly over them in the forthcoming days….weeks, months and years.

Thanks also to all our family and friends for all their enthusiasm and support.

readyv1small.JPGSo this is what Charlotte looked like this morning.  Another two or three weeks and we should have our brand new twins!  We did the same kind of photo when we were expecting Monty so we thought we’d repeat it.  I’ve put up both so you can see the difference.Charlotte and I are just about ready now - well, as ready as we’re ever going to be. readyv2small.JPG

                        Tamba

One of the advantages of being a father expecting twins is that I am entitled to join all sorts of clubs like TAMBA. Maybe other people are allowed to join too; after all the organisation is a charity. Nevertheless I feel as if I have a right to belong there.

So I joined a couple of weeks ago and have been really impressed with what I’ve found so far.

This includes all kinds of fact sheets on various aspects of bringing up twins. I just read one called “Dealing with Differences in Multiples”. What is useful for me is that in my state of total ignorance I can learn some rudimentary facts about twins very easily. I was recently diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder, so finding useful information in short documents like fact sheets is perfect for me. Also I don’t have time to study anything in more depth at the moment.

Other benefits of the Charity include the forum. I can see this will become a major source of help for me in the months and years to come. No doubt there will be many times when I will be pulling my hair out trying to find out how to deal with some aspect of family life and can go to the forum to get answers from fellow parents.

One of the things which is already causing me some concern, for example, is not knowing what car I need to get in order to transport the new “team” in when they arrive. I’ve already had several responses to a post I put up, with some really useful comments and things I need to consider.

Another great service the charity offers is a helpline called Twinline where you can get help and advice over the phone from other parents of multiples. I expect there will be times when I’ll need to call them too…

So if, like me, you’re new to this twins thing, have a look at Tamba and see if it might be helpful for you.

Talented and extremely agile twins on the trapeze
I have been lucky enough to see the Cirque du Soleil a few times in London and think they are some of the most magical and memorable evenings I have ever had. As a runner and former personal trainer I am constantly impressed by the agility, physical strength, stamina and skill of the cast.

So have a look at this clip from Saltimbanco. It runs for a few minutes but it’s worth it. These twins are superb.

And if you ever get the chance to go to the Cirque du Soleil, go for it.

I saw this today and it made me laugh. It’s great to see the talent of these two twin brothers, Brendan and Jackson Kenny . They chose the theme music to Beverly Hills 90210 for this clip, a programme I never watched (they didn’t have it in my day). So I’ve never heard the real theme tune. But this link is just a bit of fun created by two talented twins. Please feel free to leave any comments with any information about other talented or famous twins.

Talented skateboarding twins seen on YouTube

I’m hopeful our twins will become sporty and healthy like their parents. However, although I like sport, I’ve never been a star performer - I’ve always had great admiration for those who are. I saw this clip of Tristan and Nic Puehse on YouTube and thought how I missed out on the whole skateboarding thing when I was young. One or two of my friends had them at school. I tried one once and fell off before I’d actually got the stage of moving on it. I decided from then on that I wasn’t meant to go sideways. It’s why I don’t windsurf or snowboard.

But to see people being talented in a sport is always exciting so I enjoyed watching the clip of these twins out in the USA skateboarding. I have no idea if Monty and our twins will ever want to do this, but I’m all for it if they are…

If you want to see more of the Puehse twins take a look at their website
